I have always had an issue with the words guru and expert. First off, the dictionary says that guru is:
Guru definition is — a personal religious teacher and spiritual guide in Hinduism.
which immediately disqualifies business or specialist ‘gurus’ and this brings me to expert. Whilst an expert is described as someone with prolonged or intense experience through practice and education in a particular field, it also implies that they have nothing further to learn and it is this that causes me to pause and consider their value.
Whilst I agree that someone with prolonged or intense experience through practice and education has tremendous value, their journey of experience and education should be never-ending meaning that they would never reach expert status.
People within an industry who show that they are continually learning and growing and striving to be an expert are those that I value, follow and learn from. The rest have reached their journey and so have nothing more to impart.
